01. 02. 945 - RESEARCH DISPATCH – UPDATE 1: WELCOME!

Dear magical colleagues,

I have been waiting for some very important news to be confirmed to me by the trusted sources I’ve sent out to the Geatlands for the last few days.

Although this first post marks the beginning of my career as an amateur historian, it nonetheless brings me no joy to announce that Beowulf, King of the Geats, has died.

How exciting! To know that my suspicions were correct, of course. After over fifty years and to the day of his incredible defeat of the monstrous Grendel, Beowulf has fallen in combat. Reports are murky at the moment, but I cannot wait to get details on the fight. Was he cut down by a Swede lordling? Did disease ravage through his hall? Perhaps yet another beast dared to encroach on the greatest hero of our age’s lands?

And I will get the details. Through this new project site, I aim to produce a document that very well may be the first of its kind: A Recorded History of Beowulf and the Danes. An entire generation of peoples have lived their lives with a genuine, real-life epic hero in their midst. That must be immortalized.

Logging off,

BEED

BEOWULF IS DEAD! BEOWULF IS DEAD! BEOWULF IS DEAD!

In YOU WILL NOT WIN AND YOU MUST DIE, YOU CHURL, BEED, a computational wizard living in 9th century Denmark, attempts to put together the materials she deems necessary in order to publish Beowulf’s biography with the help of her two minions, field research assistants WORLD and RIM.

As you open the first main page of the public research blog, it becomes obvious that BEED has abandoned the project altogether after months of posting on her personal website. Through decades of data loss, images have broken down, documents have been lost, and dispatches between BEED and her familiars have become incomprehensible. It is up to you, the player, to reconstitute the remains of Beowulf’s life through BEED’s eyes, by pulling the project’s threads back together.

Take notes, explore overly edited, error-filled, and abandoned pages across a lengthy medieval blog archive. Whether you know who or what Beowulf is, you are invited to figure out what the hell is going on in...

YOU WILL NOT WIN AND YOU MUST DIE, YOU CHURL!

This is the first public release of CHURL and it will definitely have game-breaking bugs that I missed. Let me know if something isn't working at all in the comments. Oh and...! Post a screenshot of your DATA REPORTS if you can :+)
